POLL: A majority of Americans believe Trump's claims in the Georgia election tampering case are serious

.....The former president is now facing four indictments, all of which he denies

Trump claims to have 'irrefutable' proof that the 2020 presidential election was rigged

The former president has stated that he will conduct a news conference on Monday to prove his baseless allegation that the election was stolen

In the midst of former President Donald Trump's fourth indictment, a new ABC News/Ipsos poll finds that a majority (63%) of Americans believe the charges approved by a grand jury in Georgia related to efforts to overturn the state's 2020 election results are serious (47%) or somewhat serious (16%).

Trump's latest indictment was handed up in Fulton County on Monday, charging him and 18 people in a "criminal racketeering organization to overturn Georgia's presidential election results," according to District Attorney Fani Willis.

Trump claims he did nothing wrong and that the four cases brought against him are politically motivated and "un-American," which prosecutors refute. He has pled not guilty to his three previous charges, but

Only a quarter of individuals believe this week's indictment is not too serious (10%) or not severe at all (15%). Earlier in August, a similar proportion (24%) believed Trump's Jan. 6-related accusations were unimportant.

A plurality of Americans (49%), believe Trump should have been charged with a crime in the Georgia case, while 32% do not. According to an ABC News/Ipsos poll conducted using Ipsos' KnowledgePanel, 55% of Americans believe Trump should pause his presidential campaign, while 33% believe he should not.

At the same time, a plurality (49%) believes Trump's claims in Georgia are politically motivated, while 35% believe they are not. All of these findings are consistent with the poll conducted immediately following Trump's election.

In polls conducted after the previous indictments, 42% of Americans said the charges in the federal case in Florida involving Trump's alleged mishandling of and refusal to return government secrets after leaving office were very serious, while 30% said the charges in the state case in New York City involving hush money payments to an adult film actress in the days before the 2016 election were very serious.

According to this week's poll, 47% believe the Georgia figures are very significant. In comparison, 51% believed Trump's Jan. 6 claims were extremely serious.

The latest ABC News/Ipsos survey comes on the heels of Attorney General Merrick Garland's appointment of Delaware U.S. Attorney David Weiss as a special counsel in his investigation on Friday.
